It’s not quite as poetic as a reunion of the two greatest teams of the 80’s would have been, but it should still be fun.

If you’re a Lakers fan.

PS I haven’t forgotten the First Annual Kiss-Off Contest. Valuable Prizes are still being considered (and budgeted for), and the winners (and losers) will be contacted shortly

“Good evening Mr. Killomen, and thank you for shopping at Blockbuster. Your movies, Weekend at Bernie’s II and Waiting to Exhale, are due back Wednesday by noon. Let me just get you your receipt and you’ll be on your way. Let’s see here’s your freebie.com ad, your budget rent a car ad, an ad for the upcoming movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, your ad for great deals on Harry Potter DVD’s, and oh…this small one is your receipt.”

5 pieces of paper.

5 pieces of paper for a couple of movies. Stop the madness!

I’ve made a somewhat depressing observation, lately, here in the land of “milk and honey” (aka “silicon rummy” [well, it rhymes anyway {speaking of which, what rhymes with orange? splorange, that’s what!}]), the non-proliferation of new billboard ads.

In fact, said non-proliferation has escalated to such an extreme that it is no longer even just a matter of waning ad rollover, it is instead a problem of the absence of ads all together!

I’m sure you share my shock and dismay.

Where previously you were guaranteed to be assaulted by a multitude of technology-themed advertisements whilst traveling to and from San Francisco from your Silicon Valley cave, you are now not-so-much-assaulted-as-mildly-perturbed by one or two Got Milk? ads, and a disturbing number of ads for nothing…that is to say, blank billboards, with only a number to call should you be interested in un-blanking them.

This trend corresponds directly to the drop in available jobs, housing prices, and inexplicably, the continued rise of fuel prices. I suppose this would depress me further if my company was one of the ones who had a financial need to drop even their advertising; but, luckily fo rme, I’m unemployed and therefore have not those kinds of problems. Ahem.

So, the First Annual Kiss-Off Contest was a rousing success with a couple of baker’s dozens worth of participants. As I figure out the specifics of the Valuable Prizes, be sure that the stragglers amongst you get in your last minute entries.

In related news, I have 39 people on my Yahoo! Messenger ignore list to date; comprised entirely of unwanted teen porn advances, miracle cures, and hott_sexx645 chatters. There’s a moral in there somewhere.

In keeping with Ariel’s excellent idea, I’m prepared to offer a substantial reward to anyone who can find me a job.

Please peruse the resume and email me with any leads. This offer shall remain open until I’m gainfully employed…

This sums it up excellently.

When the balance of fouls is 27-20, and 3 of the 5 starters are in uncharacteristic foul trouble, and Shaq is given the opportunity to shoot only one free throw, something ain’t right in Mudville.

But then I’m sure to be biased.

I’ve returned from backpacking in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Instead of describing how beautiful it was, I’ll simply show you.

Needless to say, it was a great trip.

The fact that it was punctuated by getting into Santa Cruz in time to see the Lakers come back from a 20 point deficit and win at the buzzer made it even better. Which, by the way, reminds me of something Tony said about “fair-weather fans”. It is trendy to be a Laker fan right now, and people don’t quite believe me after I give the ubiquitous explanation that I have always been a fan, from all the way back in the 80’s. They usually change their minds, though, when I persist in my explanation, telling them how I went to Pat Riley’s basketball camp as a young baller, naming off the starting lineup (including the number one 6th man) from the 85 championship Lakers (that being Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, James Worthy, Kurt Rambis, and Michael Cooper), and talking about the games I’d see in the Forum (back when it was just The Forum, and not the Great Western Forum, or it’s replacement, The Staples Center which, although absolutely spectacular inside, doesn’t even pretend to have a name other than a commerical).

For those and many other reasons, I speak from experience when I say that it would be amazing to the Celtics and Lakers, head to head, in the Finals again.

So what’s the point? Nothing really, except that I cheered loudly when I saw this.

OK kids, I’ll be spending the Memorial Day weekend backpacking in Big Basin. Look after things while I’m gone, please.

Motivated by Tony, I checked out the 100 Greatest Books of All Time list, that was created recently and was also surprised to find that I’d read 21 of them.

I don’t know if it’s really a healthy goal to try and read them all, but I’ll give it a shot.

The fact that it will be hard to ascertain the cause of Chandra Levy’s death, partly because the local animals have been picking through her remains, probably evokes one of the worst images in my mind that I’ve had in a while.

Though this image of two vibrant, sexy, beautiful women kissing a walking corpse runs a close second:

There is nothing more patriotic than a stirring rendition of our National Anthem, delivered by a larger than life talent, before a major sporting event.

Like TV’s Barry Williams

Before Celebrity Boxing II

Joey Buttafuoco and Joanie “Chyna” Laurer
