Today is the 27th and it’s my 27th birthday. This means something to someone.

Tragic things that happened today:

– On Sept. 27, 1939, Warsaw, Poland, surrendered after weeks of resistance to invading forces from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II.

– In 1854, the first great disaster involving an Atlantic Ocean liner occurred when the steamship Arctic sank with 300 people aboard.

– In 1959, a typhoon battered the main Japanese island of Honshu, killing nearly 5,000 people.

– In 1964, the Warren Commission issued a report concluding that Lee Harvey Oswald had acted alone in assassinating President Kennedy.

– In 199s, In Afghanistan, the Taliban, a band of former seminary students, drove the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani out of Kabul, captured the capital and executed former leader Najibullah.

Slightly less tragic things that happened today:

– In 1779, John Adams was named to negotiate the Revolutionary War’s peace terms with Britain.

– In 1979, Congress gave final approval to forming the Department of Education, the 13th Cabinet agency in U.S. history.

– In 1991, President Bush announced that he was eliminating all U.S. battlefield nuclear weapons, and called on the Soviet Union to match the gesture.

– In 2000, Venus Williams became only the second player to win Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Olympics in the same year with her victory over Elena Dementieva.

Today’s birthdays:

– Rock singer brad arnold (3 Doors Down) is 23

– me, I’m 27

jason kottke is 28

– Actress gwyneth paltrow is 29

– Rock singer stephan jenkins (Third Eye Blind) is 37

– Rock musician greg ham (Men At Work) is 48

– Singer meat loaf is 50

– Actor wilford brimley is 67

Kinda slim pickins’. Looks like Gwyneth and I will have to do something stellar together.

According to this article, GM will be dropping the Camaro and Firebird lines after 2002.

NNNNOOOO!!!

If that happens, how will we create beatific W.T. scenes such as this:

Seriously, now, is nothing sacred?

Driving to work and stopped at a light, a middle-aged guy walked in front of my car and crossed the road. He was about 5’6″, dressed in sweat pants and a T-shirt, had a bike helmet perched far back on his head, headphones on that were connected possibly to nothing, elbow pad on the right arm that was also holding a Coke, and he was munching on a sticky-bun.

I saw none nearby, but should a riderless, song-less, hungry bicycle with a wicked tilt to the right happen along, this guy is totally ready.

Why don’t you save that money for when you die, then you can hand it directly to the devil. – Jimmy Kimmel

So this is becoming a revolution. Tara of darkness falls continued the tradition and sent me something for my aforementioned birthday from my aforementioned self-serving wishlist!

More specifically, Radiohead’s Amnesiac. Which, as Tara mentioned in her packagae, is rather apt as we went to the concert together.

Gifts that are both cool and significant are that much better. So, Tara, let me offer my thanks through linkage!

I want you to know

He’s not coming back

He’s bloated and frozen

Still theres no point in letting it go to waste

Get your knives out

Catch the mouse

Cook him up

Don’t look down

Shove it in your mouth

The refrigerator light went out today. All the joyful packaging of my mustard bottle, Pepsi’s, fruit on the bottom yogurts, and sundry other items are now muted to the point of non-eye-catchedness and non-consumer-greed-inducingicity.

It reminds me of the days when affordable and reliable refrigeration was readily available, but the convenience of electric light on demand had not yet been invented. I shudder to think of an entire nation plunged back into these, now personal, Dark Ages. Where, little Silas, reaching purposefully for a nutritious pudding pack, comes out mistakenly with a cup of wheat germ. The horror, the horror…

Signs that, from now on, everything’s coming up “Dave” – – First and second in a series

.: Walking down the street, the only guy in a group of 6 other girl…friends, I hear honking coming from behind me. An early-model yellow Caddie slows perceptibly beside me, and, continues its honking. Inside, my brotha, wearing a fedora and a huge smile, honks with one hand, gives me the A-OK, You-are-a-Stone-Cold-Pimp-sign with the other, and then drives off.

.: At a restaurant shortly thereafter, the waiter asks me if, he too, can get some of my pimpatude. I tell him I will think about it. And I do.

I’d like to thank the Academy…

Wow, so booboolina was kind enough to send me something for my birthday from my self-serving wishlist! How cool is that?!

I can’t see anything wrong with sex between consenting anybodies. I think we make far too much of it. After all, one’s genitals are just one important part of the magnificent human body. I have no argument with the essential part they play in the reproduction of species; however, the reproductive process has been assured by the pleasure both parties receive when they engage in it.

I contend that SEX IS SEX and LOVE IS LOVE. When combined, they work well together. if two people are of about the same mind. But they are really two discrete needs and should be treated as such. Time and space will not permit me to expound further, especially in the area of the psyche. I don’t believe in overly moralistic philosophies. Have your sex, it can be very exciting, if you’re lucky.

I hope the music that I present here makes you lucky. -Marvin Gaye

ahhh yeah! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
