Poor Paul Hamm
I watched him make his fall and comeback to Olympic gold and was stunned buy his performance. I clapped like a big dork when I saw him nail his routines and I gave American-esque Whoo-Hoo’s when I saw him claw his way back to first.

But he didn’t win.
I know the rules say blah blah blah, but he did not win.
He almost won.
His routines were amazing. His feat of regaining position after falling to twelth was incredible. His comeback made a great story. But he didn’t win. Somebody did better, and that should be all there is to it. I don’t understand the debate, and I really don’t understand how Paul hasn’t given his medal back and conceded that he only earned a “mere” silver. How do you convince yourself that you’re the best when you’re clearly not? The Koreans aren’t cheating, they aren’t saying he shoul dbe judged better for subjective reasons… this all amounts to what can be simplified as an addition error. There’s no debate about it. 2+2=Korean gold, American silver.
Besides, climbing back to silver from twelth place is nothing to scoff at… that’s absolutely incredible.

Bush finally takes the honorable route, and calls for an end to the outside smear campaing against Kerry. A little late, and after having to be urged by Democrats and John McCain, but at least he's finally doing what's right.

Mas Politico
An excerpt from an excellent and disturbing Salon.com article:
Before attending a rally to hear Vice President Dick Cheney, citizens in New Mexico were required to sign a political loyalty oath approved by the Republican National Committee. “I, (full name) … do herby (sic) endorse George W. Bush for reelection of the United States.” The form noted: “In signing the above endorsement you are consenting to use and release of your name by Bush-Cheney as an endorser of President Bush.”Around the country, Bush is campaigning at events billed as “Ask President Bush.” Only supporters are allowed entrance. Talking points are distributed to questioners. In Traverse City, Mich., a 55-year-old social studies teacher who wore a small Kerry sticker on her blouse had her ticket torn up at the door. “How can anyone in the United States deny someone entry?” she asked. “Isn’t this a democracy?”
I don’t know that John Kerry will be any better. I do know that he can’t be much worse. I simply do not understand the blind allegiance to Bush by the more radical conservatives that walk among us.

Granted, I voted for Gore, and was disappointed when he lost. I feel that Florida should never have happened, and I have never believed in the electoral college system, no matter who the candidate. Having said that, I supported our President as he led this country. He did some things wrong, he did some things right. I am a firm believer in not using over-generalizations (“all Republicans are blah blah blah”, or “Bush has done nothing right for etc etc etc”) so there is room in my ideology for a conservative president to still do a good job. I would never do the disservice to dismiss someone because of rhetoric or without considered decision. My dislike of Bush comes from experiencing the years of his rule and disliking the way he’s done things. I don’t like what his done for the economy. I don’t like what he’s done for our international reputation. I don’t feel safer, I am less prosperous, and I don’t need a religious zealot representing a country of varied religious beliefs. It’s not about Republican/Democrat, it’s about dissatisfaction at a job poorly done.

How is it that, with all the mounting evidence against the war in Iraq, with the actions like those referenced in the article above, that supporters can still be so adamant? They are attacking Kerry (without justification) for actions done 30 years ago. I am attacking for Bush for the way he is leading this country NOW. Defend that if you can, I am honestly interested to hear it.

Why isn’t the “liberal” media reporting this more? (the correct answer is: because there is no liberal media). The article describes the release of some of the military records of one of John Kerry’s most vocal Vietnam opponents, another swift boat captain, Larry Thurlow; who was apparently part of a 5-boat flotilla along with Kerry has claimed that the basis for Kerry’s Bronze Star is compeltely fradulent, that he never came under fire while rescuing Special Forces officer Rassman from the Bay Hap River. (How Kerry got injured then, is also a question).
Here comes the rub.
Thurlow also earned a Bronze Star that day for helping to rescue those on a disabled boat where his actions (quoting his own military records) “took place under constant enemy small arms fire which LtJG Thurlow completely ignored in providing immediate assistance”. Thurlow argues that he thought he got his Bronze Star for just helping out the disabled boat.
Give me a break.

Nobody earns a Bronze Star for helping out a disabled boat, there’s nothing heroic in that. Helpful, sure. Considerate, absolutely… but medal-worthy? No. What you do get medals for is assisting a boat that was just damaged by a mine while under enemy fire, putting your own life at risk for the sake of others.
This negative campaign strategy of the Bush supporters is sickening and childish. We have military veterans willing to completely discredit themselves and lie for the sake of mudraking. What has the world come to?

In an effort to be truly informed, I watched Outfoxed last night, a disturbing expose of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire showing how instead of being ‘Fair & Balanced’ it really pushes Murdoch’s own right-wing agenda. Even assuming Fox isn’t pushing an agenda, it is at least rife with opinion and assumptions, something a news organization should never be. The moment you make a conclusion based on your opinion is the moment you are no longer reporting news. So really, Fox News, the whole ‘Fair & Balanced’ thing is a joke.
And don’t get me started on Bill O’Reilly. I’m all for having a contrary opinion… but when that opinion comes in the form of brow-beating and insults, how am I supposed to respect that? It is scary how twisted his version of reality is when relaying events that he personally took part in.
I weep for this country’s uninformed.
Also, for the conservatives in the audience, I sincerely want to hear all sides, so please, reference me to your version of Fahrenheit 911 (though I cynically doubt you will be able to, as the truth is stronger than fiction).

What I'm doing this weekend
If you had happened to see the Yahoo! News Photo Page at the same time I did, you would have noticed that the Most Emailed photos were as follows:

what is of more interest to America other than hott chicks and nose picking? Apparently, not much.
What I find mroe interesting, perhaps, is wondering what kind of photographer can so unabashedly turn in photos like the above? I mean the Pope is a given, of course, but how does the rest of the conversation go?
Male Photographer: Hey Chief… umm, so here are my pictures from the Olympics. I have a half dozen pictures of the crowd reaction and then this one spike…
Chief: Mmmmm-hmmm
MP: Umm, yeah, and then I have 14 rolls of these hott chicks’ asses and then this one of some girl-on-girl action.
Chief: I understand…
Which, of course, I am all for.
The wierd thig about the internet, in my opinion, is that nobody wants to see me naked.
That being, primarily, what the internet is for.
What does it mean when I’m writing an e-mail, pause and backspace, while I say to myself, “No wait, that should be a capital 3…”?
Oh yeah, that I’m an idiot.
